Once upon a time…
For a long time, I felt like I was part of a beautiful, compelling story. Life was a fairy tale, and I was the knight. There were things to conquer. There was good and there was evil, and I was on an epic adventure. I wouldn't have put it that way back then, but my young heart knew it.
Then, the way life does, deep pain came. The hardest part was that much of it came from the church, the same place that first taught me the gospel and first showed me the enchantment of the world. The wells I'd drawn from didn't run as rich anymore. The water tasted bitter. Something naive in me was gone, and I couldn't get it back.
I was stuck in a trench of disenchantment. I didn't want to give up on the church, and I certainly didn't want to give up on Jesus. But something in me had gone quiet.
I'd never been a fiction guy, and I'd definitely never been a fairy tale guy. Then, reading with my kids, I stumbled into Narnia. Narnia led me to George MacDonald, and MacDonald opened the door to a whole world of old stories.
These simple tales held something I'd been living but could never put into words. As a man, I knew there was more. Self-help books never quite reached it. Somehow, these did.
